Pokémon Yellow Version is a role-playing video game for the Game Boy that was released in 1998 by Game Freak and distributed by Nintendo. It’s an improved version of Pokémon Red and Blue from the first generation of the Pokémon video game franchise. Nintendo released Pokemon – Yellow Version on September 12, 1998 in Japan, followed by a global release in 2000. The game Pokémon Yellow is based on the anime.
The plot is mainly based on the anime’s Indigo League saga and includes many fan-favorite characters such as Jessie, James, Meowth, Nurse Joy, and many more. Pikachu, like in the anime, refuses to evolve into Raichu. The original three starters are also available for players to gain.
As the game progresses, players acquire Pokémon for the Pokédex, which they then use to defeat the eight Gym Leaders and eventually the Elite Four, all while battling Team Rocket, a gang dedicated to manipulating Pokémon to become more powerful. The player has acquired 149 varieties of Pokémon by the time they face the Elite Four; in the post-game, once the Elite Four have been vanquished, the player can visit Cerulean Cave, where Mewtwo, the final Pokémon in standard gameplay, can be found, battled, and captured.
Pokemon – Yellow Version Gameplay
Yellow, like Red and Blue, you adventure through Kanto, where you can catch up to 151 different Pokémon species. The goals are the same as well, however, there are some changes along the route. For example, the player can not choose one of three starter Pokémon at the start of the game. Instead, the player must choose a wild Pikachu caught by Professor Oak. Whereas your rival gets an Eevee.
It’s a third-person, overhead perspective game like its predecessors, with three fundamental screens: an overworld, where the player navigates the main character; a combat screen; and a menu interface, where the player configures their Pokémon party, items, or gameplay settings.
The ultimate purpose of the game is to acquire, evolve, and trade all 151 Pokémon to complete the Pokédex, a comprehensive Pokémon encyclopedia. You can use a Game Link Cable in Pokémon Yellow to allow players to switch Pokémon between two cartridges, including those from Pokémon Red and Blue. This type of exchange is essential to properly fill the Pokédex because each game has version-exclusive Pokémon. You can also use the Link Cable to fight against another player’s Pokémon team.
The player battles other Pokémon using their Pokémon. The screen turns to a turn-based battle screen that displays the engaged Pokémon when the player finds a wild Pokémon or challenges another Pokemon trainer. During the battle, the player can choose from up to four different moves for their Pokémon, as well as use an item, switch their current Pokémon, or leave. When a Pokémon’s health points (HP) are depleted to zero, it faints and cannot combat again unless it is resurrected. When an enemy Pokémon faints, the player’s Pokémon in the battle gain a set amount of experience points (EXP). A Pokémon will level up once it has accumulated enough EXP.
