Pokemon SoulSilver Version is a Nintendo DS remake of a Game Boy Color game Pokemon Silver. Alongside its counterpart HeartGold, it was released on September 12, 2009, in Japan, commemorating the 10th anniversary of Pokemon Gold and Silver. The remake, developed by Game Freak and published by The Pokemon Company and Nintendo, belongs to the fourth generation of the Pokemon franchise.
Just like the majority of Pokemon games, Soulsilver follows the story of a young trainer battling against other trainers and wild Pokemon to strengthen their own, but also defeating the villainous Team Rocket. Although the plot follows the 1999 games, the game offers several expansions and additional content. In comparison with HeartGold, despite the number of similarities, there is no doubt that this is an independent game. To complete the Pokedex, it is needed to trade between the two games, to obtain the version exclusives, but trading is also possible with three other generation IV games: Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.
Pokemon – SoulSilver Version Gameplay
Pokemon SoulSilver Version is a role-playing video game. The game is played on two screens: the battle screen and the menu screen which is also a touch screen. The journey starts in New Bark Town, and after running an errand for Professor Elm, the player gets to choose a starter Pokemon, between Chikorita, the Grass-type starter, Cyndaquil, the Fire-type starter, and Totodile, the Water-type starter.
After obtaining Pokeballs from the professor, the player sets off on the journey through the Johto and the Kanto region, to become the best trainer there ever was. When the player leaves New Bark Town, the player sets off to battle and defeat all gym leaders of the Johto region, to collect all of the gym badges. After collecting the gym badges, the player will be able to challenge the Elite Four and the Champion. By defeating them, the player becomes the new champion of the region.
Battle System and Catching Pokemon
The main mechanic of the game is battling other trainers and wild Pokemon since those are the primary ways of leveling up Pokemon. During battles, the player can either fight against the opponent, use an item, switch the Pokemon or flee. Fleeing from battle is impossible during battles against other trainers, and can only be done against wild Pokemon. In the battle, the damage inflicted to Pokemon reduces their hit points (HP). When either the player or the opponent has no Pokemon left, the battle ends. Also, the winner gets a certain amount of Pokecoins.
When battling wild Pokemon, Pokeballs can be utilized to catch them. The lower the HP of the wild Pokemon is, the easier it becomes to capture it. However, status conditions such as paralysis and sleep can also make it quite easier to capture wild Pokemon. The catch rate varies with every Pokemon, with Legendary pokemon being the most difficult to catch. By defeating wild Pokemon and other trainers, Pokemon gain experience points and level up. With each level, the stats of the Pokemon increase. On certain levels, they can learn new moves, while certain species evolve at certain levels.
