Pokémon – HeartGold Version is a 2009 remake of the 1999 Game Boy Color role-playing video game Pokémon Gold. This NDS ROM features elements from Pokémon Crystal as well. The game is part of the Pokémon video game series fourth generation, and it was created by Game Freak and distributed by The Pokémon Company and Nintendo on the Nintendo DS. The game was published in Japan on September 12, 2009, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Gold and Silver, and was later released in other areas in March 2010.

HeartGold takes place in the fictitious universe of the franchise’s Johto and Kanto regions, which contain peculiar creatures known as Pokémon. The game’s main goal is to become the Pokemon Champion in both the Johto and Kanto regions by raising Pokémon and defeating other Gym Leaders, trainers, and many more opponents.

Pokemon – HeartGold Version Gameplay

Pokémon – HeartGold is an action-adventure role-playing video game. The games’ basic mechanics are substantially the same as those of their predecessors. Gameplay is viewed from a third-person overhead perspective, as with all Pokémon games for handheld consoles. While playing the game, you will familiarize yourself with three basic screens: a field map, where the player navigates the main character; a battle screen; and a menu, where the player adjusts items, gameplay settings, or their party. The player chooses one starter Pokémon at the start of the game and can capture more with Poké Balls.

The screen transitions to a turn-based combat screen where the Pokémon fight. The battle starts when the player encounters a wild Pokémon or challenges a Trainer to a battle. The user can use a move, an item, switch the active Pokémon, or flee during combat. During bouts against trainers, fleeing is not an option. Pokémon have hit points (HP), which you can see during battles. When a Pokémon’s HP depletes, it faints and cannot combat unless you take it to a Pokémon Center. You can also cure or revive it using a Pokémon skill or item. The player’s Pokémon will gain experience points if it defeats the enemy Pokémon. It will level up once it has accumulated enough experience points; most Pokémon evolve into new species when they reach a specific level or meet certain parameters.

The purpose of the game is to become the best trainer in Johto and Kanto by raising Pokémon, completing a Pokédex, conquering the eight Gym Leaders in Johto for Gym Badges, facing the Elite Four and the Champion, and then defeating the eight Gym Leaders in Kanto. Finally, the game’s last boss, Red, may be found atop Mt. Silver.
